Chose the MLife Gold Line. Were sent to an old grumpy lady. Had the $20 dollars laying on the counter, but didn't bother to offer, as she seemed not to be receptive for the trick. Asked to add my Mlife Gold Card to the booking and received a 7th floor partial fountain view room. Not the best view and right above the nightclub with loud music in the room half the night. Didn't catch too much sleep and changed into a 28th floor pool view room the next day.

Had a standard room slipped 40 between the cards and asked about any complimentary upgrades. Mentioned it was our first time in Vegas for my girlfriend's 21st. We got an offer for a Premier Fountain View room or Corner room suite with jacuzzi tub and more sq. footage without a view. We chose the latter. The guy also asked if we wanted to make any reservations, and we asked about the buffet and he gave us a line pass which was extremely useful because the line for the buffet was over 50 people long. He also sent chocolates to our room because of the occasion. Really great experience.

This upgrade was for the Vdara, which isn't listed here, so I put Bellagio because it is right next door. The suite we got was four levels from what we paid, and the lady put the $50.00 on the counter and went the back to "see what she could do" for us. Came back and gave us a choice in room upgrades, and even showed us what each room looked like on an ipad. We choose what we wanted a one bedroom, two bath corner suite. Amazing! Will always do this, nothing to lose.

After reading the site and figuring out that this was a possibility, I decided to go for $40. I made small talk with the lady walking around with her iPad asking if I was checking out. She directed me to an open agent and I provided my "sandwich." At the end of the day, I was in a "resort room" and was upgraded to a fountain view room. The only bad part is that I was put on a smoking floor AND after asking to be moved, "we're overbooked." Be careful what you ask for.

Weekend reservation, so not sure if rooms would be available. My friend checked in right before me and got standard room with desert view. Check in was busy and young lady was at the desk. I put $50 in between my license and credit card, and asked if any free upgrades are available. She took my cards, and put the $50 bill flat on the counter and said she would look. After a bit of haggling, I got a center King tower room. The room is nicer, with a bit more amenities than a standard room. But did have a great view of the fountains.

Worked exactly as advertised. I put the money between my passport and credit card and as I handed it to the check-in clerk I casually said "We're getting married this weekend. Are there any complimentary upgrades you might be able to offer us to make our visit extra special?" (I offered $40 because of the length of our stay.) She placed the money on the top of the counter, offered us her congratulations, and then said she would see what she could do and then walked back to talk to the manager behind her. They spent about five minutes discussing things and then she came back and said she could move us into one of their "small suites" at the end of the hallway where it would be nice and quiet so we could enjoy our privacy. (That wasn't technically true as the Resort King Room is not a suite, just a room that's about 20% larger than the standard room.) She also told us she comp'ed us a bottle of champagne from the mini-bar. She then asked if there was anything else she could do for us. I thought about pushing my luck and asking her to waive the resort fee but chickened out. When I said that what she offered was acceptable, she completed our transaction and then picked up the money and thanked us. The room was fantastic, with panoramic views looking out to the mountains on one side and overlooking the pool/courtyard on the other. When we went to checkout, we discovered we had been charged $50 for the champagne, but the front desk manager had that removed immediately with no questions asked. He mentioned that was a mistake on the check-in clerk's part and she should have had a bottle sent to our room instead of telling us to use the minibar. We certainly feel our tip of $40 well spent, considering that was only $8 per night.

Late day check-in at about 10:30pm on a Friday. Not ideal. Checked in with a timid but motivated young lady. Dropped the $100 bill on the counter between a CC and my ID, she made a few calls and we had a better room waiting for us. We had to have been hindered by our check in time, but for $100 I expected something a bit better.

Worked like a charm. Went up to the counter and handed over my license and credit card with 50 bucks sandwiched in between. The clerk looked at her cpu and said she was sorry her cpu had just locked up. She motioned for her supervisor and she told him the same. She gave me back my sandwich tip and the supervisor then told me to wait for a second and he would motion me over to another clerk momentarily. Sure enough he waved us over and I gave the sandwich again to the new clerk and she went to work on the cpu and upgraded us. There really was nothing to it. Well worth it.

Approached an older woman at the desk, gave my credit card and driver's license with a $50 bill in between. She took all three and put the $50 on the side and said, "I don't know what that is." (right....). I asked if there were any upgrades, since it was out belated honeymoon (which it was). She gave us a corner room on the 23rd floor of the Spa Tower, which had windows facing two directions, and I understand a larger bathroom than a normal room with a jetted tub. She also sent up a bottle of sparkling wine and chocolate-covered strawberries.

I booked 2 nights regular room in 2 different reservations using my Hyatt credit earn from opening a Hyatt Chase credit card. While waiting for my flight to LAS, I came across this website. I went ahead and tried, giving $40 to the gentleman at the check in counter. He promptly put the cash in his pocket. I mentioned my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and asked for an upgrade. After making a phone call, he said he would give us an upgrade. Then I asked if we can get a room with fountain view, but he mentioned the suite he gave us has swimming pool view and it's huge. I took it, and boy the room was the Bellagio Suite, which is one of the best hotel room I have ever stayed in the US. He also waived our resort fee when I asked about it. However, I'd made a mistake of not calling Hyatt before my trip to combine my two reservations. I had problem booking 2 rooms in a row on their website. The man told me he couldn't guarantee my upgrade for the 2nd day and ask me to check the next day. The next morning, I went down very early to look for him but can't find him. So I asked another lady, while handing her a $20 bill with my credit card, if she could find me a similar suite with fountain view. However, she placed the money back on the counter right away. After calling, she said she couldn't give me a different room, but I could stay in the same one. I was happy enough because that means we didn't have the change room, and truly it's already a very nice room. When asked about waiving the resort fee, she asked me why would I expect that. However, after I explained that I told the man it was our anniversary, and blah blah, she said she would take care of it. (I wasn't sure and went to double check with someone else in the afternoon, and also mentioned the man's name, and they did take care of waiving the resort fee). I thanked her and left the counter without taking the $20. I think she deserved the tip even though we wasn't as nice as the man I met the day before. In all, the $60 paid for itself, for the waived resort fees alone.

I stumbled across this website and found it very useful. I was hesitant to try the "sandwich trick", but I did it anyway. Without even asking the front desk employee for an upgrade he knew exactly what I wanted when he saw the bill. He separated the "sandwich" and left the money on the counter and told me, "I'll see what I can do for you". I also asked if I could check in right away (it was 9am and we caught the red eye in from HI). In the end we got a fountain view room upgrade, very early check in and an express line pass for the complimentary buffet line. It does pay to choose the person who will check you in wisely. Some employees either don't get it or won't do it.

Virtually no lines when i arrived at 10p on a tuesday in mid july, went up to a younger asian girl and tried the $100 trick. Figured go big or go home and really wanted a nice room as I didn't plan to spend much time out in the July sun. She got on her computer and then the phone for at least 10 mins. Finally put the phone down (not hung up, just down) and said "we can't upgrade you but we can prepare a nice gift package. It will be delivered to your room" i figured why not...well that "gift package" showed up and it was a craptacular assortment of nuts and cheap candy. Total BS, Bellagio sucked aside from this. Never going back to that dump

This was my first experience with the $20 Trick. Folded the $20 and placed it between my credit card and ID. The lady tried her hardest to get me the best available room. Was offered a Jr. Suite and the Deluxe Fountain View. She recommended the Fountain View over the Jr. Suite. She took my cell number down and said she would check if anything better was available on the next night, which apparently there wasn't.

I tried the $20 trick a few years ago and did well so we wanted to see what we could get for $100. We placed a $100 bill between the credit card and DL. The clerk asked if the cash was to cover room expenses and we told her it was for her and were there any upgrades available? She asked if we were celebrating anything and we confirmed that our anniversary had been the week before (okay, 2 weeks but why quibble?). She then told us she had a lovely room for us with a "view of the lake". Poor hubby was confused as he didn't know the fountains were in said lake. We didn't get a suite but it was a lovely room on the 35th floor pretty much at the center of the fountains. We were there 3 nights so I believe we totally justified the bigger gamble.

I did not use the $20 trick, as I just had a very good feeling that the attractive woman that was servicing my line would be accommodating. I simply nicely stated that I saw there were still suites available to book for our stay, and if there was any way possible for her to make my weekend and give me a comp upgrade into one. After a quick call to housekeeping, I was in a corner salon suite with fountain view in the spa tower!

Chose a young guy who seemed friendly but his line moved so slowly the other lines lapped his and multiple other check in agents were available so moved over to a youngish woman. Gave sandwich and asked about a fountain view upgrade, which was all I was really hoping for. She immediately said they're pretty much booked and didn't really seem to look or try anything. Seemed ambivalent at best about the situation - maybe new or not sure how to handle - asked if I wanted change at the end - $20 bill sat awkwardly on top of counter between us as we went through the standard check-in procedures. We were put in spa tower relatively high floor, "sunset" (i.e., mountain / non fountain view, secondary/back instead of main tower) and she pointed out the high floor so maybe that's all she could do or maybe the computer had us in that room anyway. We had booked a moderately discounted room/air package deal, so perhaps this limited our upgrade potential, and not sticking with my original choice of check-in agent might have, as well. I am wondering if the stated success ratios here skew positive since there is a brag factor when succeeding and those not having luck may be less inclined to come post about it here.

It was also my wife's birthday which we told her and she arranged to send strawberries and champagne to the room. During our three nights it never showed up. After successfully getting upgraded using the sandwich at MGM Grand, when I moved over to Bellagio I was hoping to do the same, this time with $50 instead of $20. After all, I was hoping for a suite, since I would be sharing the room with my mom and sister, and just for two nights. I was early, though, and I think that's why it didn't work. At 11:00 a.m. they just didn't have anything to upgrade me to, even with the $50. The nice young woman offered me to come back later, but since the Premier Fountain View room was available right then, and I was lugging a bunch of stuff, I decided to just take it. I kept the $50. It was a great room - 21st floor, room 56. Gorgeous fountain shows. We had a great time.

She took credit card, cash and ID and immediately said yes we can definitely upgrade you. Since they were fully booked and we were checking in around 8pm, she said the best she could do was upgrade us to the Deluxe Fountain View room on 25th floor. She also arranged for a bottle of champagne and half dozen chocolate covered strawberries to be sent to the room (around $80 value total). She also waived the resort fee and gave us VIP card for buffet and bellagio cafe. All in all it was worth it for the resort fee alone and the champagne and strawberries were a nice touch. We have never tried this before so we were a little nervous but it was a smooth, easy transaction. We definitely got our money's worth!

Immediately asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. The receptionist was really smiley and helpful, but the real problem was the length of our stay! After a short wait while she conferred with a supervisor, she upgraded us to a lovely corner room in the Spa Tower and threw in a buffet line pass too. If we'd been staying for less time, I think she might have given us an even better room! Definitely worth asking, so thanks for the tip!

Tried the sandwich for the first time, put $30 between license and CC. Handed to lady, and asked if there were any 'complimentary upgrades' available. She was polite, placed the $$$ on the counter and said she'd look. I added that a fountain view room would be great. She smiled and continued to look. She then made a call for about 5 min, came back and told me we were upgraded to a fountain room. I said 'Great', she pocketed the cash, and we went to our room with a FANTASTIC view. Checked later, and it was approx a $50-60 upgrade charge/night normally. Will do the Sandwich every trip now!

Gave us an amazing corner room in Spa Tower with jetted tub, two amazing windows with incredible views, probably one of the best hotel rooms I've ever stayed in! One of the highlights of our entire trip! Would highly recommend the $20 Trick & remember to smile, be polite & warm when doing so. It goes a long ways!

Left $40 on the counter as I checked in. Guest clerk then noted that he could offer an upgrade for me to his favorite suite, the Cypress Suite. After I was checked in the clerk asked if I needed change for the $40 and I told him that it was for him. After check i completed, he thanked me and gladly took the gratuity. Only one Cypress Suite per floor and it is located in rounded center of the hotel facing the fountains. Amazing views through floor-to-ceiling windows from the the bed and from BOTH bathrooms. "His" bathroom had a large steam shower; "Her" bathroom had a large jacuzzi tub. Since we were staying with a large family group I also asked (and received) VIP line passes for 12.

I never saw a front desk clerk work so hard in my life. After much typing and several phone calls, we were both upgraded to Junior suites in the Spa Tower and also given VIP passes to cut the line at the Bellagio Buffet or café. This was my first time trying the $20 trick and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Las Vegas. Upping the ante with the $50 surely helped.

Well well well what a waste of time this was in doing this so called TRICK. It was Feb 2, 2013 when I went to Bellagio and got a resort room knowning full well I could've afforded the Fountain Room. I was being cheap and thought they could give me a free upgrade. This was not the case as I was instructed for ID and credit card and put $20 American and the person put the money off to the side and started typing away. I asked can I get a higher floor then what you see there? The answer was NO. Can I get an upgraded room? Answer was NO. The person didn't move on anything I said. I even said what does it have to take for me to get an upgraded room and the person said you should've paid for the more expensive room from the start. So I grabbed my bags and went to the room and then came back and asked a few other people who told me management doesn't like the idea of them getting tips for higher floors or upgraded rooms. It makes the hotel look desperate and certain people who DO pay for a more expensive room maybe left out so please tell everyone do not give us tips as we do not want to lose our jobs in giving someone a different room then finding out someone who paid for that room won't get it.

We went to check in, had the money ($20 dollar bills) like in a sandwich as we were supposed to. We were booked for a standard, we were checking in with a young gentleman. Really nice, friendly, black haired guy. Handed him the money, but he did not take it and just left it on the check-in desk. He told us he can upgrade us to a Salone Suite, and we said can you ask your supervisor and see if you can do something better for us. (7 of us went, all friends) He said here is the key for the Salone Suite, you guys should go freshen up, and in about 30 minutes I will give you a call up. Called about 20-25 mins later, and said whenever everyone is ready, just come downstairs to the desk and trade in the keys for a Grand Lakeview Suite. We had a blast, and I tipped him an extra $100 for doing this for us. Awesome experience!!! Everyone should try this trick, worth the gamble.

We successfully upgraded at the Bellagio this week with a $40 tip at check in. Our front desk agent was a young, mid-20's female. I didn't use the "sandwich" I just handed her my ID and credit card for incidentals all while having $40 unfolded and laying on the counter during the interaction. I asked about complimentary upgrades and she immediately looked and upgraded. I asked about Lakeview but was told those were still selling at $60/per night addl. We took the offered upgrade, completed the transaction and sign in, and at the end I handed her the $40 in plain view and said "this is for you for finding us an upgrade, thank you :)" We were upgraded on a 3 night stay Wed - Sat from a Deluxe in the Spa Tower (value $837) to a Tower Deluxe King in the Bellagio Tower on the 27th floor (value $987).

My girlfriend and I arrived in Las Vegas early on August 5, 2012 at 8:30am. After we got our luggage and picked up our rental car we were off to check into the Bellagio. I had already booked a standard lake view room for us and I have read reviews about the "sandwich" trick before so I figured I would try it out. At the desk there was a young girl, I would say in her 20's, and I presented the $50 in between my driver’s license and my credit card. I asked her if we could check in because it was so early and she said yes. I asked her if there were any complimentary lake view suites available and she said that she would take a look for us. After on the computer for a minute or two she asked if we were celebrating anything special and I said that my birthday was in two weeks and my girlfriends was last month. She said that she would be right back. After she got back she said she had a junior suite available in the main tower which was overlooking the fountains. I said that would be great! She also provided us with a line pass for Cafe Bellagio and the buffet which helped out tremendously since there was always a line at the buffet. It was nice with the line pass just to bypass everyone and look important walking through our own line. The junior suite was very nice. It had a his and her sink, whirlpool tub with a window that overlooked a nice portion of the strip (Planet Hollywood and The Cosmopolitan). We had a turndown service at night, a nice view of the fountains and another window by the bed since it was a corner suite. It was a nice trip. Although at the end of the trip we went from Mlife Sapphire to Gold and not too many points away from Platinum. Gold give you your own line pass anyway. Needless to say we spent a lot of money but we had a great time! Try the trick! It worked for us!

Thanks to everyone on this site. We put $40 for 5 nights in between our credit card and passport when checking in. We tried to check in really early about 7am so the day at reception said she would see what she would do. As per other reviews the tip is left in full sight and accepted with a smile. We were moved to a higher floor (from the 7th to the 26th) and to a fountain view room with a line pass so you skip all the queues to breakfast. The view each day over the strip was incredible and so worth $40. We also were able to check in at 830am and overheard someone who hadn't tipped being told that they couldnt check in till much later that day. Well worth it. make sure you try this it takes a bit of guts as the women behind the desk look a bit bolshy but just try it it worked for us!!

We arrived at check in time so it was packed. I waited in line and became increasingly nervouse as I got closer. I wrapped a $50.00 bill around my d.l. as instructed and asked about complimentary upgrades. The girl had no reaction other than a quick "of course...let me see what I can do" as the fifty remained in clear open view on the counter. She clicked away on the computer and offered us a free upgrade to a corner suite with both a view of the fountain and a view of the strip. She also waived the $22.00/day resort fee (we were staying for 4 days so already the tip paid for itself). She also gave us vip line passes for the buffet which allowed us to jet up to the front of a full line on a sunday morning. All well worth the $50.00. I think next time I will have the balls to also ask for a free buffet as well.

The lady seemed to be taken aback when the bill fell onto her keyboard but I quickly asked if any complimentary upgrades were available. She offered some suites ranging from $50 to $100 per night. I asked instead for a room overlooking the fountain, knowing full well that my government rate room was probably by the janitor's closet or the ice maker. She made a quick phone call and said she did have such a room overlooking the fountain on the 18th floor. In addition, she provided me and my wife with line passes for the buffet and Cafe Bellagio. Arrived at the Bellagio for check in around 2:30 p.m. The front desk was not busy, so I kept trying to size out different employees. However, there was an employee who was directing guests to the open reservation clerks. I refused going to a couple of them, but it became difficult to do this because I kept on getting ushered somewhere. I wound up with a male that I didn't get a good vibe from immediately. I used a $50 sandwich, because I was attempting to get upgraded to a lakefront suite. An upgrade from what I booked would have been the Salone Suite. The guy took the sandwich very professionally and told me he would look to see what was available. I specifically mentioned I was interested in a Salone Suite - maybe this was the problem? Click, click, click and finally he told me that there wasn't a suite available for the full 5 days I was there. Huh? Then he offered me an upgrade to a Bellagio Suite (bigger than the Salone Suite) for $100 extra a night. I passed. He then mentioned that the room I had was an end room, with more windows, and a bathrub partially overlooking the Strip (the other view was that of a parking lot). My room was very nice though, and I would not hesitate to book the same room again.

I walked up around 7:00pm on a sunday and put the $20 between my ID and credit card. It was a woman in her 30's. She placed the twenty on top of her cash register, and I asked if there were any better rooms available. I guess it is an accepted practice, since she did not attempt to hide the twenty at all. She said, let me see what I can do, and about 20 seconds later we had a fountain view on the 20th floor. The view was awesome. We were staying for four nights, so 5 dollars a night extra seemed like nothing for such a great view. The only bad part was that we were moved from a non-smoking room to a smoking room, and she said that was all she could do, but I think that was because we were so late in checking in. I also heard another guest being told by another person that the only fountain views that were still available were smoking rooms, so I guess it was truthful.

we checked in for a 3 night stay (wed-sat)and went to the first attendant available. it was a 30ish woman, and i tried the trick with the money between my passport and credit card. the woman smiled as i handed it over implying that she had seen this trick many times before. i also told her that it was mine and my girlfriends annaversary, and i was planning on getting engaged (all little lies) she upgraded us to a fantastic room with full fountain views. i thought i would push my luck and ask if she could do anything else for us, and she threw in a line pass for the cofee shop and buffet (if you dont ask you dont get!) i also tried for military forces discount at the box office for Cirque Du Soleil. i was offered 25% discount no questions asked (on a $110 ticket) and after an obscene amount of flirting with the young gril (about mid 20's) was offered her staff discount of 50%. well worth it! $20 trick well worth a try and i will definatly be using it next time!

Booked a Bellagio "coupon code" rate of $159/night for 4 nights. As this was the beginning of spring break season, as well as the start of the NCAA tournament, I expected my attempt to fail. Thinking my chances were low, I tried the $20 trick with a $50. The agent politely asked if I could wait a moment, picked up the phone, and 2 minutes later, I was getting what she referred to as a "junior suite" - room 15083 - it's actually called a "Tower Deluxe King" on the Bellagio website. While the room itself was similar to a standard room, it is slightly larger (100 sq ft), has a separate water closet, and double vanity. Further, as it was a corner room, it had three huge windows that provided lots of natural light. All in all, I think that my $50 was well spent, given that it only raised my rate $12.50 a night on a room that would have surely been $40-$60 more per night at standard rates.

Glad I read this site before heading to Vegas. I booked a standard room using just air miles to cover it. Put a 20 between the license and credit card and asked if he had any rooms available with a view of the fountains. He worked on it for a few minutes and came back with a room on the 25th floor of the spa tower with a view of the fountains and the Strip. Worked great!

He found us a lake view room with a king bed but I needed two beds. Since we were checking in early, I asked if we could get a lake view room a bit later if we were wiiling to wait. He said no problem, and we went for a walk and came back an hour and a half later and we had a sweet room dead center on the fountains on the 24th floor right near the elevator. Best room/vegas experience yet and I have been to Vegas about 20 times. Will definately use this trick again! Try it!

Got a friendly looking guy in his late 20s. It was 11:30am so early check-in as well but worked after a slight hiccup. i gave my reservation voucher (room booked by my company) and then $40 with my ID - asked for a view. He asked if a smoking room was ok (I wanted non) and showed me on a map where it was. I said ok but when I got to the room on the 8th floor I was disappointed; could live with the smoke smell but the view wasn't that great because it was so slow. i mean, better than a room facing the freeway, which he said is what was reserved, but not great. My husband went back down to retry with same guy and asked for a higher room. He gave us a 22nd floor king, non-smoking, deluxe lakeview room with the most awesome view. no smoke smell. how did i know it was for sure an upgrade? the 8th floor room didn't have bathrobes, this one did.

We were put in a 25th floor Deluxe Lake View Room which had an utterly fantastic view of the strip. Walking in to the room, the first thing we saw through the window was the Eiffel Tower in front of Paris. The entire fountain show could be seen as well. She seemed a bit confused by the $100 but after some checking she put us in a beautiful corner Tower Deluxe with views of the fountains from all corners of the room as well as the bathtub. Beautiful. The check-in guy made a call but said he didn't have anything available but that he did move us up to the 27th floor and gave us a partial view of the fountains. Was really hoping for a nice upgrade for our 9th anniversary but to no avail. Of course it's mid-July so the place could have been pretty full and something bigger than a $20 may have been needed to persuade the guy. We were given the buffet front of line pass which was great, especially for breakfast. Overall we enjoyed the room and our stay at the Bellagio.

Asked about availability of complimentary suite upgrades as we are celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary. Mentioned that the pictures of the Cypress suite looked fantastic. He agreed and then said "oh, I don't think I can do that." He typed around for a bit and said I was already in one of their premiere rooms (b.s.), but he'd get me on a higher floor since I was slated for the 10th (he put us on the 28th). He was asking questions while he typed, like have we stayed with them before and such. We used the bellagio web promotion to book the room at a discount, so I'm thinking that since we already were paying a discount, he felt we were already getting plenty for our money. He did also give us buffet line passes which were a blessing. All in all, I would have rather saved the $50 and been on the 10th floor. I felt that if he couldn't give us at least something remotely like what I had inquired about, he should have given me the $50 back and just said he couldn't do it. Overall, I think the Bellagio thinks VERY highly of itself, disproportionately to the quality of the hotel. My $139 room was no better whatsoever than the $59 rooms I usually stay in at the Monte Carlo. Watching the fountains from the room is almost like watching it on TV anyway and does not compare with watching it from the sidewalk in front of the hotel. Have learned my lesson and will try the trick at the Monte Carlo next time...at worst I will not get much for my money but will have spend half on the room rate.

Wife walked up to registration desk, chatted a bit, indicated that it was her birthday (which it was) and handed the young, female clerk a $50 sandwich. This seemed appropriate since we were staying for 6 nights, including the weekend. She requested a suite or room with a jacuzzi. The clerk said that a suite would be $75/nt extra but we could get a TDK room at no additional charge. She assigned the room, and never tried to take the $50. My wife moved it across the desk as a tip. A great deal - the TDK was going for about $625 more than the standard we had booked.

She called the room about an hour later to make sure we liked the room or if we wanted to switch. She also sent up a box of chocolates for us. Checked in at 10pm and handed clerk $50 sandwich. She smiled and asked what I was looking for. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. She said she had a Lakeview room or a suite in the Spa Tower. I took the suite and loved the room. For $12.50 a night more (I stayed 4 nights) I was on a special access floor just one level below penthouse. It was great!

Stayed at the Bellagio and tried to slip $40 in between my id and credit card and asked for a Fountain View room. The girl at the desk quickly took my id and credit card but gave my money back and said it was unavailable. I was very surprised that she didn't take up my offer. So instead she put me in a pool view room which was nice as well.

Handed the $20 bill with the credit card to the clerk. She set it aside and made no mention. We got a room the size of shoebox (I didn't know rooms were that small at the Bellagio). We changed rooms the next day, paying over $100 more per night.

I used $100 because we were there 9 nights for a work convention. Put it between my ID and CC and asked if there were any "complimentary suite upgrades available". She was very sweet and said "let me check for you" she went to the back and was gone for a few minutes and came back with the book to show us which room we had. 1500 square foot suite. Very nice! We got moved during our stay because of electrical problems with our room and they moved us to the penthouse suite!! Even better! Best $100 I ever spent in Vegas.

Checked in and handed a $50 sandwich and got "upgraded" from my original fountain view Tower Deluxe King to a corner room with a view of the construction at Caesar's palace.. My parents reserved identical rooms but didn't do the trick and the only difference between my upgrade and their room was mine had an extra window but not view of the fountain.

We were staying at the Bellagio for my 30th birthday. I put the $20 in between my id and credit card. I said it was my birthday and asked if there was any complimentary upgrages tonight. He quickly pocketed the $20 and immediately upgraded us from a standard view to the 20th floor corner king suite. It had a west view of the Rio and Palms, a jacuzzi view of Ceasars and a west view of the corner of LVB and Flamingo! It was amazing! I have also asked at the Luxor before and they offered an upgrade from the pyramid deluxe to the tower deluxe rooms.

Did it work? No and Yes!! Sorry if I blab on a bit here but i figure the more info the better for future travellers. (after rereading it's very long - sorry) Checked in the Sat night before christmas around 7PM. Yeah a bad time I know but had no choice. Had booked a non-fountain view room. Check in was absolutely packed. No line organisastion so picked a suitable candidate - young buck. Eventually got to front of line and had 2 x $50 folded in my passport (i figured $100 for the week was worth it). He opens passport and could have easily palmed the 100. Instead he says "there's no need to do that. You have a complimetary upgrade to a fountain view". So what happens next is the $100 sits on the counter. Due to my nervousness I can't quite register that i have a "free" upgrade and the $100 sits obviously on the desk untaken. It's all quite awkward and i feel a fool. Anyway we get the room cards and as casually as i can take the $100 back. It should be noted that there were at least 2-3 supervisors/managers hanging around behind the check-in staff. It should also be noted that my wife took great pleasure in ribbing me about my lack of "paying" for an upgrade. She was more than happy with our "fountain view" free upgrade though. Room was great - 6th floor but only a partial view of the fountains. Better than a mountain view though. Was it 5 star? - hmmm maybe more like a nice 4 star. Minor faults like a few lights not working and one of the automatic curtains not working. Anyway we were more than happy and set off to enjoy the Bellagio and Vegas. A couple of days later (inspired by this site and a friendly chat to a pit boss about my initial pitiful attempt) i tried again. It was coming up to 2am and I folded a $50 in my palm. Check in was quiet and in a very friendly manner explained that it was our 15 year anniverssary (true) and that while i was very happy with our room my wife was niggling me about the minor things (lights). I made sure she saw the $50 in my palm and said "you could really help me out with my wife if there was a suite available. And i would certainly help you out". Maybe not subtle but it worked. Anyway ended up in a corner room on the 25th floor. Not actually a suite it turned out but wife could not have been happier :)) Laying in the spa bath together watching the lights of the strip is a nice way to spend some time. Was $50 well spent. And had it for another 5 nights :) Was $50 too much? Maybe to some, but after this everything just went my way: - free line pass from concierge just because i chatted to him about Seinfeld and tipped nicely for booking a show. - from pit boss was comped buffet meal for two and another line pass on chrsistmas day when others waited over 4 hours for this (ok did play and bet a while for this but was unexpected). - front seats on Grand Canyon heli tour (one way) after i know we were originally allocated back seats both ways. - limo driver for heli tour making silly excuse about traffic and going out of his way to drop us off first on way back just because we laughed at his (good) jokes and tipped him on journey in and no one else did. So basically be genuine and nice, appreciate those that are working hard for your enjoyment, and tip well when appropriate. Worked for me and will definitely be back.

We had heard about the trick so thought we would give it a go. We went to Vegas for a quick marriage and wanted to make it extra extra special. As soon as the girl saw the 100 you could see her eyes light up. She said to me 'whats this?' I said, "its for you if you can make our stay extra special, this is my fiance and we're here to get married". A few clicks on the computer and she came back with "we have a really nice, deluxe fountain view room" I said, "that's nice, do you have any suites" Another few clicks later and she handed me the key card: "enjoy your stay". We took the exclusive lifts to our own floor and walked through our door into what looked like heaven. We had a steam room to celebrate. :o)

Did not work. Vegas is or has undergone An unfortunate change and no longer takes care of those who take care of others. This trick not only did not work but was meant to feel as though I had done something wrong and no longer acceptable. Maybe this is only the case at high end hotels. In my opinion don't try this trick with the snobs at Bellagio.
