Since we had 2 room reserved, I thought I would up the ante to $50. Young gal at front desk immediately returned the $50 and said we could upgrade for x amount per night. I was so impressed with her honesty that I insisted she keep a $10 tip.

Paid $34/night for a 2 night stay with a $20 food/beverage credit. I knew that for an extra $20 for the 2 nights I could have had a strip view so was hoping for more than that, as we didn't think it was worth the extra 20. There was about a 25 minute line for check in, so I was getting discouraged and was nervous as I'd never tried this before. I approached the counter and she asked my last name. When she found it and asked for my ID I put the "sandwich" on the counter. "More people here than I expected, but I don't suppose you have any complimentary upgrades available, do you?" She let the 20 sit there and said she'd see what she could do. I mentioned my wife's birthday was next week (which was true) and I think she'd love a suite. She kept looking and said yeah, she could do a courtesy upgrade for 2 nights and asked if the luxury suite would be OK. No view, but a much nicer room. I said absolutely. The room was amazing and I was stoked! Looked it up and that room went for $179 those 2 nights. Best gamble I made all week and I will be trying this again next time I'm in town!

I tried it at Excalibur this weekend and it did not work! I put $20 in between my credit card and ID and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Dealt with a young African American lady, in her late 20's who was very polite and a great help. I came up explained to her the heck of a time we had had getting there including an aborted landing coming into Vegas that had rattled my girlfriend. I placed the 'sandwich' down on the counter.. she said she would see what she could do for me. Took the ID and the Credit card and left the money... Went through the whole booking process without acknowledging the twenty and I thought no dice.. When she was done she let me know what I had booked, and what she had given to me as a complimentary upgrade. I thanked her.. and still she didn't take the 20 until I urged her to and explained that was a tip for her.

A group of us decided to make last minute reservations and head to Vegas for some midweek action, Tuesday-Friday. I read the reviews on this site and told everyone, as expected everyone said yeah right it’ll never work! We had reserved two rooms under one name, both standard rooms in the old tower lacking updated furnishings, etc, with a south view of the lovely nothingness that direction! When it was our turn to check-in we handed over the ID and credit card, and then before any more conversation one of the males in our group sat a $20 on the counter and said “do you have any complimentary upgrades available?” Without hesitation the gentleman said “let me check it out!” A minute later he said yes and described the upgrade, which totaled $30/nt per room - $180 total, putting us into Tower II in a nice room with an amazing view. After he confirmed that we would like this he booked us into it, only taking the tip at the end of the transaction. And he was very thankful and happy about it! I would try this tip trick at every hotel from here on out! I keep telling everyone we should have tried $50 and shot for a suite! Oh well, maybe next time? =)

Checked in on Memorial Day. I had a standard room at $41 - figured it was not a busy time because of the low price. Wasn't aware of the $20 trick so didn't ask for an upgrade. The young lady checking me in mentioned an upgrade, I thought it would be for a "nicer" standard room or one facing the strip. I got to my room and surprise, it was a 1-bedroom suite. If I had known about the trick, I would have offered the check-in lady $20.

We checked in Sunday Night of Memorial Day weekend. We read all about this trick and decided to try it. The worst that would happen, according to the reviews, is the 20 would be handed back. We were nervous it would not work, being the middle of Memorial Day Weekend, but decided to try it anyways. We got to the desk around 9:30, and I approached with ID, Credit Card, and a 20 between them. I set it on the desk, slipped it toward the young lady, and said "We have a room reservation, and was wondering if there were any complimentary upgrades?" She smiled, looked at the 20 and said "Is this for me?" She took it, and immediately placed it under the desk where no one working with her can see it. She said nothing about it for the next 3-4 minutes. It wasn't until the very end that she hands us our room key packet and says "You have booked a standard room, but for your generosity,I have upgraded you to tower 2, and have given you a view on the strip!" The trick worked perfectly, and will always at least try this every time we go back down!

This was AWESOME!!!! Checked in on a Sat evening around 7:30. Checked in thru the VIP lounge. I asked how full the hotel was and was politely told that they were almost full. I placed the $20 between my husband's license and my cc. I then asked if there might be any upgrades avl. She was very helpful and then said she found a jacuzzi room. I was thrilled! Until she said that all the jacuzzi's had been unhooked, basically making them just great big bathtubs. I was a bit disappointed then. She then proceeded to find an excellent one bedroom suite with a jacuzzi. I was again pretty happy to at least get a suite!!! It wasn't until we were in the room and tried the jacuzzi and found that it WORKED when I, again, became thrilled!!! Four nights in a one bedroom jacuzzi suite for a TOTAL of $197 that was brought down to $150 after comps.... Can't wait to go again!!!

After researching the reviews about the "twenty dollar sandwich" I opted to upgrade to Tower 2. I approached the desk to a Latino woman in her late twenties, early thirties. I carefully folded my twenty with the big 20 insignia facing up between my state ID (top) and credit card (bottom) and when she took it, I immediately asked: "Would it be at all possible to be upgraded to a non-smoking Tower Two room?" She replied: 'I'll see what I can do.' Then she asked me if I wanted a view of the Strip and I replied I would. She then completed her transaction and handed back my cards (sans $20) and room information, "You're in tower two, floor 23, room 9. Have a pleasant stay." The room turned out to be two Queen beds, decent and exactly what I wanted. Thanks for the sandwich tip!!! Worked like a charm!

This was the first time I ever tried the "Twenty Dollar trick" and it worked like a charm! We booked 8/19-8/23 and booked the old standard rooms because it was extremely cheap for the four days. When I got to the counter the lady asked for my ID and I simply wrapped the $20 bill around my ID and asked he if she had any complimentary upgrades available. She took the $20 bill and didn't say a word. I felt pretty good at that point. She came back suing we would be in Tower 2 in their upgraded rooms which are normally an extra $20 per night. We ended up on the 17th floor with a great view of the pools!

Told the girlfriend on the way down to Vegas about the "Trick" on getting an upgraded room. While waiting to check in she asked if I was going to try it and I said of course! Of the 4 desk clerks working I got the one I felt least likely to give me the upgrade but I still delivered the ID and credit card with the $20 tucked in between. I asked if there were any complementary room upgrades available and without even a blink the $20 was gone and the clerk was typing on her keyboard checking to see what was available. She told me she could upgrade me to the widescreen view room from the standard room I had booked for the 3 nights we were going to be there but it was facing the pool. I told her that was fine and thanked her. She said the room wasn't ready yet though and I would have to come back to her after awhile to get the key. She said she would call and get a rush on it and she picked up the phone. After no one answered, she said well... how about a room with a view of the strip. I thanked her again. She smiled and said enjoy your stay and thanks!

We arrived at Excalibur later than expected due to a late arriving flight, coming from the UK I was getting tired and thought about backing out of the 'sandwich' By the time I got to check in, I had my Credit Card and Passport ready with a 20 folded ready and decided to try it. The lady on the desk was older than others around her, in her mid 40's. I handed over my sandwich and asked if Tower 2 was available, told her that this was my 3rd visit to Excalibur and made some small talk. After a few minutes of typing she handed me the room keys for 24th floor Tower 2 AND my $20 back telling me that it fell out of my Passport. I let her keep the 20 and thanked her for being helpful. The next day some friends were arriving and I met them to let them know floor/room number etc, and they had a better result than me with a different check in agent, I had ended up with a view of the back of the Castle, they got a strip view of NYNY and MGM

I can't believe this worked! When the weekend started, we had everything ready to go: the cabana, the club, the limo, everything. Everything except the room! On the way to Vegas we saw a billboard for Excalibur. "Rooms starting at $59," it advertised. Right away, I pulled out my Sprint Nexus S and started an internet search for Excalibur. Meanwhile, my girlfriend was nagging: "Let me talk to them! You're driving!" I told her, "I make the plans. Let me handle this." What was I going to do? Let a woman make a business deal? Let a woman drive? Neither proposition appealed to me. When I got connected with the front desk, they told me they had a few rooms, and I booked one immediately over the phone. When we get there, the receptionist told me that it would be $89 per night! I told her about the billboard, and she made some lame excuse. Whatever, I wasn't going down without a fight. I slip her a 20 and ask her if there are any upgrades. She said we could immediately upgrade us from one Queen bed to TWO Twin beds! I accepted... but it still wasn't enough for me. I said ok, what else are you going to throw in? She said, "It depends on what you're looking for," as she eyed the $20 that was now on her side of the counter. I understood what she meant and took out another $20 (actually, two tens). She said she could get us access to the casino's player's club and a book of exclusive deals for various locations on the strip. Again, I jumped on it. How could you not?! Just as I was about to have her charge everything, I took a look at my girlfriend and remembered that her brother passed a way 3 years ago this weekend in a fireworks accident. I was determined to make this a beautiful weekend that would help her forget her troubles. I put down a Benjamin ($100 for you misinformed) and demanded that we get a room with the most gorgeous view LV has to offer. My girl and the receptionist were both astonished. Our room was immediately moved to a location with the best view of Luxor and its fireworks show. Happy 4th, baby. I love you. -M

Done this here before with mixed results. I think it depends on the experience of the clerk and how busy the hotel is. As it is, this is MArch Madness week and many people are our on spring break. Often, the clerks don't know what to do. Or then go off to ask a manager what can be done. I usually tell them (truthfully) that I've stayed here many times, etc. But they can't apparently see this on their screen. This time, the clerk went and did the manager thing and came back, gave me back my $20, and told me that he could upgrade me for an extra $20 a night (the standard rate). I said no thanks and just kept my basic room with it's uncomfortable chairs.

I'd heard about the $20 trick from my boyfriend and decided to try it on my trip. It worked! I slipped the folded $20 between my credit card and license and asked the clerk if there were any complimentary upgrades available. I was upgraded from the basic double queen room to a renovated double queen room, with a strip view of the MGM & New York New York, and a flat screen TV.

Arrived in Vegas early in the morning and checked-in at 8am. Only counter open had 3 ladies chatting behind the counter. Tried the $20 trick, only to have the (new?) staff turn to ask the manager(!!!) behind her about possible upgrades. The answer was obviously "Yes, if you pay". She upgraded us to a supposedly better room (didn't feel that way). Wasted a good $20!

I reserved two run of the house base level rooms with an interconnecting door. I wrapped 2 $20.00s around my driver’s license and requested flat screen TV interconnecting rooms with a view of the strip. This would be a double upgrade. The rooms were interconnecting on the 25th floor with a fantastic view of the Luxor and Mandalay bay, very successful.

Had a standard room booked, husband gave the clerk $20 and asked about the availability of upgrades. He had a look and offered us a king size room or a 2 x queen size room with strip view, and we opted for the latter. Had a great stay.

My girlfriend and I got to Excalibur pretty early in the morning. (9:30am) Too early for checkin. Came back around 11:30 or noon. Tried the trick w/ a middle aged woman. She took the $20 and said most suites aren't available til later in the day. She said she could give us a room w/ a nice view of the Luxor. We figured ok. Got to the room (in the older tower not renovated) Hated from the start. Nice view of Luxor but strait out of the 70s. When the bellhop came up w/ our bags, he asked how everything was, if we needed tickets to shows, etc.. Told him that we were a little disappointed w/ the room. We said it was our anniversary and that I had tipped the front desk woman and we were hoping for a little nicer room. He got on the rooms phone and put a call into a friend of his at the front desk. 3 1/2 mins. later he took our bags and us downstairs got us a new key and up to the newly renovated tower over looking the 4 pools. Room had granite in bathroom and a nice flat screen on the wall. (Didn't have high def) but still beat the pants out of the first room. I gave the guy $20 bucks and we both thanked him repeatedly. This guy was really cool and helped us have a great trip. He also gave us free passes to a few clubs. I know you can get these almost anywhere in Vegas, but he was great anyway.

We booked a regular room using Orbitz.com for two nights for $159 total. Upon check-in, we simply asked if there were any new widescreen rooms available, and we were told yes, for an additional $20/night. While we were talking it over, the guy just said that he'd help us out for free.

Check in around 5pm, no line up, I inquired as to the opportunity for an upgraded room and the response was affirmative. I asked if it had a view and it did not. One did not have the opportunity to pick the check in staff as you were directed to the next person. I already had the $20 under my credit card. The Excalibur was great, I have no issue staying there again. Our room was at the end of the hall, for me that is great. Amenities in the bathroom , pillow top mattress and clean room as well as the 42" plasma TV helped.

Check in around 1pm...got a africian/americian male in his mid 30s..i did't think i would have much luck getting upgraded from (2)room that i had to book(one rooom was a king bed and the other was 2 double beds) whaen asked for id and cc i put the 20 between the two cards and asked if i could get an upgrade to a spa room(i new i couldn't) and he said probly not so i then said how about a widescreen room with a view....after checking the pc for at leats 5min he found 2 adjoining room in Tower II on the 23 floor. The room were great ...all redone and yes it had the 42"Plazma TV. I'v stayed at Ballys..Paris...Planet Hollywood and even Imperial Palace and the room at Excalibur was as good as the other hotels(execpt IP)if not better. I WOULD STAY HERE AGAIN!!!

Awesome.... Worked again. This is four times in a row now (PH, Paris, Monte Carlo, Excalibur). Did the samich trick. She laughed and said " You so funny". She laid the $20 up on the counter and said see what she could do. Came back with "widescreen room upgrade". I asked if it was strip view and she said hold on a minute. Did some more typing and said she found a nice room us. I said thanks and she said "So this is for me?" and I replied of course. Disappeared into her pocket very quickly...... Gotta Love it.
