|The Twenty Dollar Trick Results|
I gave the 20$ sandwich at the check-in, asking if there was any complimentary upgrade available. She did check, but couldnt find anything. The hotel was mostly full due to a convention (Internext). All she could do was upgrading my room for 35$/night. I politely declined and she give me my 20$ back.
Was nervous about the front desk lady as she seemed to have an attitude with the guest before us, however, she was awesome! Gave her the $20 sandwich and she slid it to her left, away from the ID and CC. I asked if there was any upgrades and she said "we're really booked up but I will leave this right here and see what I can do." (this wasn't a lie - I went to the website prior to check in and couldn't even book a suite!) she then says, "ok, I got you in the HRH all suite tower - the room is twice as big as your last. Anything else I can do?" I said a fridge would be nice. She said "for your medication right?" I said YEP! She was a sweetheart and the room was awesome and the BEDS were seriously worth stealing. Cant believe it worked!
It was actually Planet Hollywood but that choice wasnt available. Got upgraded to a VIP suite with butler service on the top floor (800 sq foot room).
The associate checking me in was very courteous and sincere when I gave him the sandwhich. Iasked if they had any complimentary upgrades for our stay. He said, "Yeah no problem, it's still pretty early in the day here and we're not too busy so I should be able to find you something." He said something to the effect of, "I have you down in the Casino tower right now..." And i asked if they had anything in paradise tower to give him something to look for. I didn't just want an upgraded casino tower room. He clicked around on the computer for a minute or 2. Then said he found me a corner room in the paradise tower on a high floor and that it has a pretty cool view. I was very pleased with the upgrade. It was a larger room and the Paradise tower is a newer building than the Casino tower so everything in general is newer and nicer. It was spotless and had a big walk in shower and floor to ceiling windows for a 270 degree view. We loved it!
check in said they do not upgrade and gave my money back
As with many others, I was nervous trying this trick, but it worked without acknowledgement! We did have the advantage of arriving at about 11am, so most rooms were not yet available - so the girl put a note on the account (which I saw on the screen, but she never actually mentioned to me) that we should be put in a corner room.
I tried this trick and was upgraded from usual room to suite. difference is not big but room was better and bigger plus huge bathroom. Defenetely 20$ is very chip for this. Thank you for your site!

Did the 20 dollar trick @ the Hard Rock Hotel. It was very quiet in the HRH Tower and the guy was a young good looking dude. when seeing the 20 dollar he smiled and said 'ah, I will put this aside for a moment and see what I can do'. I already booked a King suite with pool view so didn't expect that much but I got a King corner suite on a high floor with a great view(I said last year we got a suite on a low level without a good view). When I mentioned it was my wife's birthday as well the day after (no lie) we also got 2 daypasses for the spa & welness (worth 50 dollar). not a very big upgrade cause I already had a suite booked but I just wanted to try :)
Upgraded my $29 standard room to a pool view for five nights. Well worth the $20
Tried the 20 sandwich and they were able to up grade me to the paradise tower with a pool view, but I wasn't quite happy with that because the room was a bit run down and stunk like someone just smoked a joint in it. The next day I went back down and after giving another 20 asked if any upgrades were available. They ere able to put me in the new hrh tower in a suite with a pool view. Worked like a charm!

Gave the sandwich, the guy said he would check and upgraded us to the AMAZING corner room of Paradise Tower! Windows on 2 walls of the room, fabulous view of Rehab pool party! Beautiful room, comfy bed, great upgrade, well worth the $20!

Long line at check in around 4pm. Handed $20 to desk clerk and asked politely if they had upgrades. He said "Yes, we definitely do. Let me see what we can find." Quickly upgraded to Paradise Tower corner room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Rehab pool. It was BEAUTIFUL! Great upgrade, totally worth the $20!
Upon check in, I slipped a $20 between my Id and CC, asked if there was any available upgrades. The person said, absolutely. I'm sure we could find something good. Took their time to look through a long list of rooms still being cleaned and was adamant that they took their time to get us hooked up on a really great room that was already cleaned and we didn't have to wait. We were also given a bunch of drink coupons and things for the hotel. The room was killer. The employee was super nice and hooked us up big time. Had a great time. Couldn't have been more pleased.

Went to check in had an original basic room with two queen beds. I put the $20 bill between my ID and credit card. The male clerk appreciated it, and I asked if there were any upgrades available. He then checked the system, and was able to put me into the suite tower with two queen beds with a huge bathroom. The room was in the smoking section, but a little glade plug in from CVS across the street my room smelt like christmas in no time hahaha. The clerk also gave me a bunch of coupons for free drinks and discounts on food purchases during my stay. Overall Hard Rock is a very nice quiet off strip hotel i would stay here again even if i didn't get upgraded.
Here's a big FUCK YOU to the douchebag behind the counter at the Hard Rock who took the $20 and then charged me for a "complimentary upgrade". I have had good luck with the $20 trick in Vegas before, but not this time. Handed the scumbag my ID and credit card w/ $20 sandwiched in between like always, asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Shithead smiled, tucked the $20 away and rewarded me with a very MINOR upgrade from their regular King Suite to a Supreme Corner King Suite. Found out when we walked in the room that it's not an upgrade at all and is only about 50sq/ft more than the regular King suite. Wouldn't have been worth the $20 in the first place. Flash forward to Friday morning when I see an additional charge on my credit card from the Hard Rock on top of the original reservation that had already cleared. Got taken for a ride by some piece of shit Hard Rock employee who charged me almost $40 for a "complimentary upgrade" and who pocketed the $20 to boot. So I paid about $60 for a "complimentary upgrade". If you're going to stay at the Hard Rock and think you're going to score a "complimentary upgrade" you might want to keep a close eye on your credit card just in case some douche at the front desk screws you over.

I did the $20 between the credit card and ID trick. The guy at the desk made a BIG commotion out of it. He was like "WHOA, WHOA we don't do that here. There are cameras everywhere watching." He upgraded us to a Pool View room in the Paradise tower - much nicer than Casino Tower. I was kinda put-off by his response. All he had to say was I'll upgrade you but here is your $$ back.
Checked in on a Tuesday. Asked girl mid 20s if upgrades were available while $40 was slipped in between ID and cc. Was upgraded from 2 standard king rooms to 2 queen suites at HRH towers newest section of Hard Rock. Bad ass and rooms were superb....
Checked in around 8pm on a Sunday evening the day before a _big_ LVCC convention (NABShow2013).

I Tried it for the first time at the Hard Rock in Late January and it did work. Off course it was off season, but still I got a much nicer room. Thanks for the info, I'll repost if it works again in August.
I checked in around 1:30 on a Sunday. No line when I got there. Had booked a basic two queen room, gave the guy at the front desk the sandwhich, and he said he thought he could help me out. When he got done, I asked what room I got, and he told me the HRH two queen suite. I was only staying for one night, and it was a Sunday, but still love the $20 trick. Loved the room, it was sick, and definitely worth the $20.
Arrived at HRH at 10am on a Sunday for Rehab. Had three rooms booked in the Casino Tower. Slipped the Filipino Girl at the front desk a $50. She took my details and said that we couldn't check in as it was too early. Went back to see her at 3pm and she upgraded all three rooms to Pool View Suites in the HRH Tower. Massive Win
PLANET HOLLYWOOD - Checked in around 7:45 PM and gave the front desk employee $20 between the CC and ID while asking for a complimentary upgrade. He took the $20 out, looked me in the eye and asked 'is this for me?'. I replied 'yes it is' and he promptly upgraded us from the $60/night basic room to a larger strip/pool view resort room. Very smooth and the bathroom ended up being huge!

I slipped a $20 bill in between my drivers license and credit card and was given a Suite in HRH tower. I was also given 4 free drink coupons for any bar in the hotel.
My wife and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary and so I thought I would try this $20 trick. So I sandwiched my cards and money and walked up to the desk. I layed the money and cards on the desk and asked her if there were any upgrades available? Much to my surprise she grabbed the $20 and said let me see what I can do. After a few minutes of computer stuff and checking in with her manager she got us a suite on the highest floor of the casino tower with a view of all the pools and the strip. It was a great way to spend our 1st anniversary together.
Checked in around 2PM on a Monday. Gave the girl at the desk the "sandwich" and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available with a little more floorspace. She smiled and asked if I had stayed there before (I did, 3 weeks after it opened)and proceeded to fire away at her keyboard. I ended up with a king suite in the HRH tower overlooking the pool. Of course, my stay was not during a convention or weekend, but it was pretty cool to get the upgrade. The rest of the people in my group did not attempt to upgrade and could not believe I was able to pull this off for $20.
Booked a cheap room from expedia, old casino tower, montain view. Did the trick - my first time! - got the Paradise Tower, 16th floor, pool view and part of the Strip view too, an empty fridge (!!), extra keys. Amazing deal. ;-)
I handed the front desk clerk the $20 with my credit card and asked if there were any upgrades available, she smiled and said I'm sure I can find you a nice room. She upgraded us to a higher floor room on the pool view side.

The girl asked if I was needing change. Once I told her no and I began asking if there were any special upgrade rates for the conference I was staying with, she understood and checked availability. I probably overpaid considering I would've likely gotten the same upgrade with a $20, the executive is only a larger version of a standard room and I don't think the girl was used to the trick. But it was at least a fair trade considering I was at the hotel for 3 nights.
Check in around 6pm, I didn't pick a specific clerk...first one open.. She was very nice, my GF handed her the sandwich and asked for an upgrade...she told us she can't upgrade us to the HRH suites...but will see what she can do... Ended up with an Awesome room (But a LONG WALK to the corner rooms) Can't be more happy with that $20 sandwich :)

I went up to a younger Asian lady and when I checked in I asked for a Complimentary upgrade. She spent a few minutes looking and she said there wasn't anything she could do. She said I could get a mini suite for an extra $1000 for two nights. It was a busy weekend with a Fetish & Fantasy Ball being hosted, SEMA was coming into town so it might have been a bad weekend to try for an upgrade.
Received a casino rate of only $69+fee tax/fees for Saturday August 14th. Went to check in at around 1pm and saw a guy in all black, wearing a black blazer being next in queue. He looked like a manager so my 1st instinct was to walk away and wait for the next available clerk. Probably a mistake. I came back 1 minute later and was helped by a mid-20's female. I made small talk by saying "how are you, busy weekend"? She said yeah, it's been pretty busy. She asked for my last name and I told her. She then asked for ID and credit card. I had the 2 plus a $20 already placed in my wallet. I handed all 3 to her and asked if there were any upgrades available. By this time, the tall dude in the black jacket is back and working on the computer right next to us. She smirked and immediate said, "no, we're all booked" and dropped the $20 back on the counter. She had the $20 in her hand for less than 1 second! She did say that we'll be on the 10th floor and it's a very nice room. She was courteous but definitely didn't go out of our way to try to help. Maybe she was afraid of the guy next to her or perhaps there just were nothing available since we were checking in on a Saturday.
Checked in around 4 PM on Sunday for 3 nights. Went to first available clerk. Handed clerk the sandwich and asked for any complimentary upgrades. She swiftly pocketed the money and worked at getting me an upgrade. She came up with a corner room (windows on the south and east sides of the room with views of the pool and mountains) on the top floor of the paradise tower. Not a huge upgrade, but definitely worth the $20, as pool view rooms are at least $20 more per night. The trick works again!
Slipped the guy a $10 and 2 $5s in between the credit card and my license and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. He moved me to the newer tower and gave me a room with a pool view. The rooms in the newer tower are bigger, nicer and cleaner, and the pool at the hard rock is something to see. Great investment.
Before I walked up to the registration desk, I had the DL/$20/CC ready to go. Therefore, when the guy checking me in asked for my DL/CC, I simply asked if there were "...any complimentary upgrades available" and he noticed the $20 and then said he'd see what he could do. He actually provided me with several options: An Executive Suite in the Casino Tower, a City View Room in the Paradise Tower or a Pool View Room in the Paradise Tower. It worked awesome and the room was excellent - I'll definitely be doing this again!!
Lady smiled when handing over the sandwich - think she gets it a lot. Asked if any complimentary upgrades available, and she asked where we wanted to be. Asked for a high room with a fountain view, and that's what we got. From their website it appears our upgrade is almost double the cost of the standard room we booked. 2 night stay during the week.
Was actually at Palms. Had 2 standard rooms which I prepaid through expedia. Slipped a $50 between my cc & id and asked if there were any upgrades available. She said she would see what she could do, upgraded both of us to suites, but was insistant the one specific room was for me. It was a corner quite on the 18th floor, about 1250 square feet. It was amazing!!!
Worked liked a charm. Got young girl in her 20's, did the 20$ trick and got pool upgrade view and tons of coupons.
paid $20 and got a room that would have cost $300 more during length of stay.
The way I did it; I put my entire bankroll on the counter in front of me where the clerk could see it (nice stack of hundreds)When I handed license and cc I asked if any upgrades were available and I started thumbing through the stack of money. He immediately checked and said "I'm sorry but I don't have any suites, the best I can do is give you a pool view." I took the pool view room and handed him a 20 as he gave me my stuff back. i would have given hime more if he gave me a suite and I think he sensed that which is why he apologized when there were no suites.
Slipped it in when she asked for a credit card and id. She was quite happy to receive the tipand said"I am going to take very good care of you"
Checked in about 8 PM on a Friday night. Slipped $20 between ID and credit card, and asked for "complimentary upgrade." Clerk checked for upgrade and gave it to me. I'm not even sure she saw the $20, as she later said "Aw, you didn't have to do that." Still, I was happy to spend the money, as the room was very nice, with living room, couch, fully stocked mini-bar and great view of pool and strip. This was a pretty slow weekend in Vegas (2 weekends before Christmas), so not sure if this will work all the time, but I was certainly happy.
When the front desk clerk asked for my credit card, I handed it to her with a $20 bill wrapped around it and asked her to check for any complimentry upgrades. She laughed a little and said "Everybody has to try that." She then checked the computer and upgraded me to a room with a nice view of the pool and the Vegas Strip. She also apologized when she informed me that they didn't have any suites available at the moment.

I went to the Hard Rock check in, flashed the $20 and asked "do you have any complimentary upgrades?" The woman helping me said let me take a look. She said she could upgrade me to a stuite but there was only one bed in the room (we had four guys sharing the room so that wouldn't work.) I told her that didn't meet our needs. She said the only other thing she could do is upgrade us to a Pool View Room. Which I accepted. She said the usual charge for this upgrade is $50 per night. Usually I don't care much about the view but I had the chance to compare it to the other side of the hotel and it was definitely worth $20.
It pays to be personable! We checked in at 6pm and were very friendly and personable. Buiding a raport makes a difference. $50 got us a nice suite for 5 nights!
I have tipped the check-in person several times over the years and have always been put in a pool view room which is really worth it if you remember binoculars!
