We've had success at the Mirage for years - until now. Was told by person checking us in that there were upgrades for an extra fee per night but no complimentary upgrades, said he was not allowed to give free upgrades. We are staying for nearly a week on the 3rd floor, very disappointing. Will stay in a different resort next year, since we visit every year!

I offered $20 with credit card and license and asked for help with any available upgrades. She politely left the cash on the counter and said she would consider a tip at the end of check in if I found her service was worth it. This seemed very formal. I got the sense the front desk management was well aware of the $20 trick and told the agents how to handle it. After a lot of discussion behind the desk (out of sight) the agent told me I could have a better view of the volcano and I'd be on the 'club' floor with private elevator. My original reservation was already on the 24/25 floor (that's what Resort Tower is), so it seemed to me I *possibly* got a view for $20. Or I got the same room as I would have gotten regardless of tip. Hard to tell. I answered 'no' to upgrade question but this could go either way.

I was nervous as this was my first attempt at the 20DT, but I gave it a shot because the front desk clerk was a young guy. I walked up and handed him my sandwich and he took the 20 out and said let's take care of this in a minute, then laid it on the counter. He told me that the problem with the suites he had available, is they all only had one bed (there were four of us staying for a bachelor party). He apologized, and said he would put us in a room with a great strip room, and would also add $50 in food and beverage credit. He left the $20 on the counter as he explained how to get to the room and offered me more bottles of water for my friends. After I said thank you and smiled he grabbed the 20 casually while saying that since there were four of us he would add $75 in f&b. Overall this definitely paid off! The room was comped to begin with via MyVegas.

We were keen to try this and knew to be specific about what we wanted. Had no choice on who we got when checking in, but mentioned to the clerk that is was our honeymoon (it was) and slipped $40 to her whilst asking if a "complimentary suite upgrade" was available. Unfortunately it was a Saturday night in school holidays, so she was very nice about it and rang someone to check, but sadly advised no suites were available that night. I asked if it was possible to come back to check with her in the morning, and she said yes - but in general they don't usually give comp upgrades to suites anyway. We ended up liking our room and couldn't really be bothered changing again, so didn't go back and ask. I'm sure it would work though if it was a week night and not busy summertime - worth the gamble I think and would try it again. By the way she left our money on the counter, which was a bit awkward for us, but I ended up giving her a $20 tip anyway - what else can you do....

First time trying this and I was staying with a few friends so we pitched in a total of $40 for one room hoping for an upgrade. I chatted up the young guy at the front desk and he seemed friendly. Asked nicely for any COMPLIMENTARY upgrades after giving him the $40 sandwich. He said he'd go check to see what's available, and placed the money on the desk. He came with an iPad showing me pictures and asking if we wanted to pay 200 more per night for a hospitality suite. I said no and asked again if there was anything COMPLIMENTARY available, knowing the hotel was nowhere near full. He said no, so I took the money back before he kept it without giving me anything(still gave him a small tip). No success whatsoever and I won't be trying this "trick" again at this hotel

After hearing about the $20 trick I was looking forward to trying it out. I handed the $20 sandwich to the front desk clerk upon her request for my card. She placed the 20 on her keyboard and began typing. I asked her if there was a chance for complimentary upgrade to a tower room. She told me she could get me a standard room with a view, but couldn't get me a tower. However, she told me she could give me an employee discount on the tower for only $20/night. It seemed like the room would have been available without a need for additional cost, but oh well. We enjoyed the tower upgrade and paid the extra 20 a night. So considering that, I would say the trick was semi-successful and semi-failure. YMMV

We didn't want to do that so I went down to the front desk & explained my high hopes, I top well, would she pleease help us out... well she left to talk to a manager, they laughed at first, but brought a key for the 2nd bedroom!! The lady at the front desk initially said that if we wanted 2 queens, we could only get a room on a higher floor with the view of the strip. Once we mentioned that we didn't mind a king, we were upgraded to the tower. For those who are only getting upgraded to a room with a view, I think the deluxe rooms (unless suite or penthouse) doesn't have 2 beds. Last time I did this, I needed 2 beds and I only got the upgraded view. I think this is the key.

While we did get an upgrade, this wasn't exactly a sucessful $20 trick upgrade. It turns out the woman at the front desk charged us a $10 per night "upsell" for the room...AND she kept our $20 tip! Front desk girl (in her 20s) said they were sold out, then saw the $20 and said she would check. When I looked up again, the money was already gone, and I had no idea where she put it. Got an upgrade to a Tower Deluxe room, which was nice but a bit noisy. The hotel seemed legitimately booked up (convention in town, etc.) but we moved to a room with a strip + pool view for the second night due to the noise. This definitely works. Spent several days in Vegas, so I had 2 opportunities for upgrades. I checked in at the Mirage around 2pm and it was really busy. I was a bit unsure about handing over the sandwich with so many people around, but I knew that there was nothing to lose. The woman at the desk was a pro, she knew exactly where this was going. At first I asked about free upgrades she said the cost would be $100 per night Then I slid her the sandwich and the price dropped to $30. We got to the room and it was amazing. It was a double upgrade as they have smaller suites. At over 1,200 square feet I have absolutely no regrets about using the trick. This is a mandatory practice when going to Vegas. Aria: Unsuccessful at Aria (they were sold out on a Saturday), fortunately they didn't keep the $20.

Nothing to it. $20 sandwich got us 24th floor, with North-facing view in the East Wing overlooking volcano and Venetian across Las Vegas Blvd. Great room, great view ... but maybe would request South-facing view on East Wing to overlook The Strip from north to south. (Mirage is at the northern end of the new strip). Very nice to have the limited-use elevators, as well. Never had to wait more the 5 or 10 seconds, if any.

Checked in early in the afternoon. Passed $20 with CC and DL, asking if there were any complimentary upgrades available and specifically mentioning Tower Deluxe. Girl at desk said she'd see what she had available. She did some typing and said, "I have a room cleaned and ready now with a view of the strip and volcano." Perhaps if we had taken that as a cue to say we'd be willing to wait for a better room we could have gotten the Deluxe, but she didn't really give us much of a chance and acted as if the view WAS an upgrade. The "view" does include the volcano (sort of) as well as the less-than-impressive Casino Royale--the view of the Bellagio fountains is completely blocked off. We're not convinced this is an upgrade at all... We'll still have a good time, but very frustrating to see the $20 go to total waste without even the fun of flashing slot machines and free drinks.

For my first time, I did the $20 sandwich during a busy check in. I walked up told the young lady I had a reservation. She asked for my CC and DL, and as I handed them to her I said, "I was also wondering if there any opportunities for any complimentary upgrades." She was very discreet, check a piece of paper, made a phone call, and gave me a Tower Deluxe with a choice of options (bed type, smoking, none, etc.). A friend of mine was also checking in, and after I told him it worked, I explained to him what the $20 trick is. He ran back to the counter after checking in, smacks $20 on the counter in front of the gal that checked me in asking for an upgrade since she "just gave my buddy one!". She talked him out of it.

Came in under casino promotion for a week. Had a $50 between my dl and cc since I was staying for a full week and it worked like a charm. At first she said no upgrades were available and they were totally booked up but I think it was because she assumed I was looking for ablatger suite. The suites haven't been upgraded and I heard mixed thongs buy I liked the tower delux private elevators, high floors, and nicer bathrooms -- so less than $10 a night for the nicer room was a sml price to pay. When I booked my room and asked about upgrading to the tower delux room I was quoted $50 a night additional charge over the normal room.. Definitely not worth it to pay that for 6 nights upgraded for a $50 sandwich is more than reasonable.

Also, not sure if it helped, but I left two shirts in the closet during my stay--- called them up after I left and the mailed them to me free of charge. Arrived at the hotel around 6pm (staying for 7 days) and scanned the group for the nicest young looking girl I could find. I had my sandwich ready and when she asked for my ID, I made small talk and asked her if there were any upgrades available. She said she would check & we continued w/ small talk (Telling her my wife & were celebrating our ann). She did some computer checking, called a couple people and was able to get us an upgrade. We were put on the 25th floor but she didn't have any volcano view rooms available. It would have been nice to get the volcano room, but w/ us checking in later I was happy there were upgrades left. Another couple (staying 4 days) we came w/ checked in beside us and did the same thing, but they were only able to get upgraded to a 17th floor room but got champagne for their ann. All in all it was easy to do and well worth the 20 dollars. The upgrade in the bathroom along (between the 17th floor & 25th floor) made the $20 trick well worth it. The 25th has double vanity's & walk in shower which was very nice.

She remarked that I had been booked for a Tower Suite. I agreed, but stated that a Penthouse Suite would really make my visit perfect. She left saying that she'd be right back, then returned with the welcome news that I'd been upgraded. And it was really a superior visit. I'd recommend the $20 trick to anyone.

So my buddy Dan told me to read this website before I went to Vegas for my friend's bachelor party. I'd never been out there before but I heard it was so fun. So I went to the Mirage Hotel and I didn't have a $20 but I wanted to do the trick. I asked the man at the counter for change so I could do the trick and he was upset with me because he had to go to his friend to get it. Anyway he came back with change and I took it and gave him the $20 and said thank you. But he thought I was giving it to him for making the change. So then I said can I have a free room and he said no. Then I asked for an upgrade. He said no and I lost my twenty dollars. Then I wasn't able to book any room because all I had was a debit card because I don't have credit in this country. So I didnt get any room and I'm wondering if there is a trick to get my twenty back.

It worked like a charm! Our stay was from 3/7-3/10 (Fri-Mon). I originally booked a deluxe room and at check-in; i slipped $20; and was upgraded automatically. The only down side to this was that the room was promised at 2pm but I wasn't able to get my room until 4:30pm.

Checked in around 2pm on a Tuesday. Had a middle-aged Asian woman for clerk. After she verified my reservation and asked for ID and CC I handed them to her along with a $20 bill folded. I asked if she had any free upgrades. She set the $20 to the side of her terminal and only took a couple minutes to get me a room on the 24th floor overlooking the pool side. Beautiful view from Flamingo all the way over to Rio. I stayed through Saturday and it was well worth the $20 since my room rate was only $119/night.

I dropped the $20.00 along with a my credit card. Ask for a comp upgrade but also said I come to Vegas 7 or 8 times a year and normally stay at the Bellagio. Bam, right to a nice suite.

My friend and I took the wives. We checked in together, with a $50 showing and asked the Gentleman at the counter if there were any upgrades. I even mentioned the good ol 24 or 25th floor. He obliged and the $50 was gone before I knew it. One room was ready, and the other was not. We went to check the one room, and the view was of the mountains - we went back down to ask for a strip view, and he had us both come back in a few hours. We came back, and both ended up with Strip View/Volcano View, a bottle each of Champagne sent to the room, and multiple night club passes. He also said if we needed anything else, let him know. Although the upgrade could be good at $20, together my friend and I each spent $25 but showing $50 looked a lot better I'm sure to the front desk clerk. I will try this every time in Vegas. It can't hurt - I'm 1 for 1!!

had four nights comped in a Tower Deluxe, what I did was not to hand the $20 with my CC but just let her see it in my hand & asked for a room upgrade even though I was comped already, was told OK and was upgraded to a 1 Bed Suite....

We were a party of four with two separate rooms. When I checked in it was very busy but I played the trick anyway and she dropped the 20 on the counter straight away as though refusing to accept it. However after checking our details she spent five minutes walking around to her apparent superiors to find out what she could do for us (I mentioned that we were celebrating a stag do). Finally came back and had upgraded us to two larger rooms both with a strip view. Different floors but no complaints as she did her best and it was a great start to the holiday!
