Walked up to the desk to checkin and at first she offered an upgrade for an extra $40 per night said no and she continued with checkin...gave me my total and the resort fee was $100 for the weekend. I asked if anything could be done about this and she said it was standard. Started pulling the $20 out my wallet and she quickly removed the resort fee and asked if we wanted to be upgraded to a double queen bed room (it was 4 girls) for free! I was nervous to try this trick but definitely worth it! I was only hoping for the resort fee to be removed but got upgraded for free which made our weekend even more amazing! (I was celebrating my 21st birthday with my friends)

Tried $20 sandwich at The Palazzo with no sucess with a mid-20s white male check-in agent. Chatted briefly after handing over the sandwich then asked for a complimentary upgrade initially - response was that they are heavily discounted "do you want a upgrade for $75?". Asked to waive resort fees - "sorry but we can't do that at check in". Gave use about $20 of coupons which I believe are standard. Kept the $20 for doing nothing.

This was actually at the Palazzo. Reserved 2 nights in standard suite; got moved to 36th floor, Strip view, and got resort fee waived for our 2-night stay (which was more important to me than a room upgrade since we saved over $60 for a $20 investment).

Called to available desk agent. Very friendly, younger guy. Had sandwich ready when asked for ID and credit card. Upgraded from standard no view king suite to 2 Queens suite in Venezia Tower, with pool view. 11th floor, but Venezia Tower starts 10 floors up, so was actually 21st floor, excellent view. 2 Queens usually an upcharge of $30, room with a view $30 additional. 3 nights would have cost me $180 more for this room, got it all for $20 "appreciation" to desk agent. This was a Priceline Name Your Own Price deal, so room was already roughly $80 off nightly rate.

Checked in on Black Friday. Slipped the $20 sandwich. Agent asked if I needed change, I said no. She said I had the standard room (Hotwire booked) and that she could put me into a Strip View. I asked about the resort fee and she said she could waive one of two day's charges. I thought this was a success. Went to checkout and the fees for both days were on the bill. All in, not sure I even got anything incremental for the $20. Win some, lose some!

I don't know if the problems we ran into helped us with the total amount of upgrades we received but we hit the jackpot in my opinion. I handed $40 in between the license and credit card as suggested and it was never mentioned. We got early check-in and a view but allowed myself to be persuaded to go to the Palazzo tower. I knew from much research that these suites, though the same layout, were not renovated like the Bella suites at the Venetian. But I took it. First, our keys didn't work which is always a bummer in such a huge facility but after traipsing back downstairs (now to the Palazzo lobby), the staff and clerks were apologetic and helpful. We got into the room and, as I feared, it was very tired and dreary. It could have used a tad more minor cleaning as well (wiped window bases and better vacuumed couch) but I figured it was still nice getting in early. But, we discovered none of the bathroom lights worked so it was then I realized I wanted to be in the renovated Venetian tower rooms for sure. So, to the clerks for a 3rd time. I told them my priority was a Bella Suite, in The Venetian tower, non-smoking. I didn't even care about the view if I could get those. They didn't have one ready (and suggested the Venezia, but no go for this gal.) Mind you, it was still very early at 12:30 and they called us at 2pm for checkin. Due to the hassles, I again asked if there were any upgrades (very politely, mind you) and she said no so I did a final push about resort fees, which she said she yes could waive. The room was BEAUTIFUL and indeed she gave us a great view of the pools, a little of the strip and mountains. It was quiet at the END of the hall (a hike but with the doors that you can hear right through, a perfect one for us) and we loved it! So I don't know how much the problems played into our hand with this one but we were comped somewhere between $150-$200 I think for the $40 i invested. That was the only gambling I did in Vegas that weekend (we were there for a show) and it paid off well! :) Thanks to all the posts here because you all enabled me to have the best first time in Vegas every!

This was a single night stay and my goal was to do early check-in/late check-out (with no fee) lose the resort fees and more if possible. I was glad to read other reviews because so many people had mentioned that the Palazzo Bella suites were not renovated but the Venetian Bella Suites were. I offered the friendly young clerk my 2 20s in between license and credit cards as suggested and no comments were ever made. We requested early check-in and were told that while normally would require a fee, a room was available in the Palazzo Tower. I resisted this greatly but finally caved. The clerk insisted the rooms were identical with one just being renovated. Well, for me, that renovation was key. I went to the older, unrenovated room and found the keys did not work. We had to traipse back downstairs and found (now in the Palazzo lobby) the clerks very apologetic about the mishap. We returned to our room to find the bathroom lights simply did not work at all. Additionally, though the view was good, the worn out room felt *very* dreary, and tired. I took the opportunity now to return to the Venetian lobby, mention our difficulties and then politely insist on a renovated Bella suite in the Venetian. In fact, I told the nice clerk that I cared less about the view than getting a Venetian Bella suite with non-smoking and early check in if possible. There were no suites available but they would call when ready (mind you, it was still pretty early at 12:30pm.)I did ask the woman if there was any other upgrade possible which she said "no" to but then I (bravely) pushed to ask about resort fees, which she said yes, they could comp those. I'm not sure if we would have gotten that without the repeated mishaps (she was not the original tipped clerk) but I was thrilled and thanked her very much. Happy we were to get the suite I wanted, we made our way down the strip. They indeed called us for early checkin at 2pm. When we returned to get our keys. We ended up on the 15th floor with pool view and partial mountains/strip view. It was GREAT! Though the pool was a bit noisy, that stops at 6pm. Oh, and I told her I wanted a quiet room so we were at the end of the hall. This was very wise because you can hear RIGHT THROUGH the doors which we did just a couple of times. We were VERY pleased with our experience. I was always polite and grateful dealing with the staff, even when frustrated. When I called to make sure we still had our late check out, the woman said, "Oh yes, that doesn't change because you had to change rooms. But more importantly, are you happy with your room now and is everything ok?" I of course thanked her and assured her it was great. So, we ended up with somewhere between $150-$200 comped with the view and early/late check-ins and resort fees. Thanks to everyone who posted here - you made our trip A1!!

Booked two standard suites in the Venetian, one for two nights, one for one for friends of ours. The girl at the front desk immediately knew what it was about and with a smile accepted my tip and started making some calls. We got upgraded to two connecting rooms on the 23rd floor with view of the pools and given late checkout. Resort fee didnt get waived but then again I also didnt ask for it, perhaps I should have done that :-( All by all, very nice room and view, so i consider this a success for my first 20 dollar trick.

FAILED! $40 for nothing basically! I specifically asked if she had any complimentary upgrades that included a jetted tub and king bed. She did some checking and said ah, yes I do have one and it's ready for check-in. Once I got to the room it was just their standard room/suite...no jetted tub! She said it had a view of the strip but not really, a partial view of TI and Palazzo (really? View of the strip??). She did give me late checkout. So basically for a $40 tip I got a 2 hour later check out that I didn't really need. Frustrated!! I get it...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but don't tell me you are giving me an upgraded room and then it's not!

On our experience this is the best gamble in Vegas. I put the 20 dollars inside the hotel voucher and my passport, and when the check-in lady saw it she started to say 'I think you've left...' then didn't finish the sentence on realizing what it was. We got a high floor room in the main tower with a strip view, no resort fees, late checkout, and extra fridge for the room, value some way in excess of the 20 dollars.

I wasn't sure about this but I did it anyway. The lady was appreciative of the tip and even asked if I needed any change after the check in, and she looked like she was trying to help. It was around noon, so early checkin, she indicated that she was giving a better room and 2pm late checkout, high floor, newly renovated room, etc. All fine. BUT.. I think some Venetian regulars need to comment on this stuff. I stayed at Venetian once before and I don't remember the treatment being much different without the tip. I think they are always trying to accommodate early checkins and late checkouts, their basic rooms are already pretty luxurious compared to other hotel rooms, all of their rooms have remote controlled drapes, TV in the bathroom, a big bathroom with glass shower, etc., and with the design of the building I don't think they have much rooms without a view of something. Anyhow, I am not sure if the $20 did anything different, but I don't mind tipping the person anyway, so all good.

I checked in at the front desk and told her my name and she asked for my ID and CC. I had it ready as the sandwich already and handed it to her. When she saw it, her reaction was not what I expected: she almost looked worried and she took it out and put it on the counter saying sorry but she can't accept this. My heart sank, but she continued on: - until the end of this check-in, only if you're satisfied then will we be able to accept it. Yes! She reconfirmed that I had the most basic room (booked on Priceline) and I said "Yes that's correct, however I was wondering if there were any complimentary upgrades available?" She got on it right away saying "Sure, let me check that for you" like she was expecting me to say it, almost wanted me to. While she was searching I told her "It'd be great if you could find something with 2 queen beds, because we have 3 people." She said okay and a few seconds later said she had a room with a view of the swimming pool. I asked if she had a Strip view. She went back to searching and said not at The Venetian, however, if I'd be willing she did have that on the 44th floor at The Palazzo which is the same thing. I took it. She gave us our room keys, told us all relevant information like how to get to Palazzo with a map, and afterward I asked her, "You know the resort fees? Is there any way that could be taken care of?" And she said "Oh, let me check that for you." She then did indeed remove them for me, telling me she'd do it as a courtesy. I thanked her. Feeling good, I decided to ask her what time my check out was. She checked and told me 11 am. I then asked if I wanted to check out later, if I'd be charged for that. She knew what I meant, and tried to do what she could and told us the best she could do was an hour later at 12. She already did so much for us, I thanked her and signed everything and we proceeded to have a great time at Vegas!

My wife and I booked the standard "Luxury" suite at the Palazzo for our 10th Anniversary. Upon check-in, I handed over the sandwich, explained it was our anniversary and asked if there were any "complimentary upgrades." The young and friendly lady quickly checked and upgraded us to the next largest suite (about 300 sq feet larger) with a view of the strip and the pool. We also purposely made sure we were dressed well, especially compared to some of the other people waiting in line. We booked two regular rooms (king beds) at the Palazzo. At check-in, I sandwiched the 20 between my ID and credit card. I kindly asked if we could have a room with two beds (there were going to be three of us in one room and two in the other). My mom, who didn't know what I was doing, said, "Oh, that sounds like a good idea. We want two beds also." The check-in attendant was great and found us two rooms, with two beds in each room, on the 21st floor. So essentially we saved $60 a night for just $20. Totally worth it!

My wife and I arrived six hours early, so I was trying for two things. An early check in and the costly resort fees waived. I approached the check in desk and was greeted by a very nice young lady. I told her that we took an early flight and was hoping that they might have a room that we could check in to as I handed her 'the sandwich'. I also told her that we would greatly appreciate it if she could waive the resort fees as we never use anything that it offers. She told us that she indeed did have a room for us on the 17th floor and checked us in six hours early at no additional charge! She also waived the resort fees and gave us a room with a view which I didn't even ask for! I told her thank you very much! We were so impressed with her that six days later when we were checking out, she was working again. I stopped by and thanked her again as we were leaving and slipped her another $20.00 since she saved us well over $200.00!

This worked for me at the Palazzo side. As I approached the young lady, we had a conversation as to the reason for the stay and things that I had planned on doing. She then asked for my credit card and I handed her the sandwich with a 50.00 tucked inside. I then asked for any available complementary upgrades. She then told me that they were completely booked (on a Monday?) but that she would see what she could do. She made a phone call and inquired about two different room numbers in which she was unable to obtain. She then told me that she had to speak to her manager. She left and walked into an office for about two to three minutes. When she returned she told me that I would like what room she was able to provide. In the end, the young lady not only upgraded the room to one with a view but also waived the daily resort fee. Overall the tip saved me 266.00 for the stay. Not to mention the coupons they gave for various places in the facility. The room provided was on the 44th floor of the Palazzo with a view of the airport and the southern side of the strip. It was an amazing view at night with the lights. We will try this again next time.

This review is for the Palazzo because there isn't a drop down selection for it so I used the Venetian. I placed a $50 bill between my Visa card and Drivers license. The clerk saw the $50 and left it sitting between the two cards while typing on his computer and making small talk. Then he discreetly placed the $50 in his pocket and said he gave me a strip-view room on the 44th fl. I was very happy with that. I would recommend people try it. I personally wouldn't use a $20, because I think $20 doesn't go to far in Vegas.

We conversed about why we were in Las Vegas and where we were from. Received a beautiful Bella Suite in the Palazzo, 42nd floor with a strip view and late check out for the price of a no view Bella Suite at the Venetian. Well worth the $20.00. Went up with my $20 between my id and my clear am ex card, handed it to the gentleman and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. He said there were and would get to looking right away. He said I have you overlooking the pool in the upgraded Bella Suite. I said that was fine, and if it were possible to waive the daily fees, he said no problem. Then I shyly asked if I could also have late check out and he chuckled and said no problem. Even without the upgrade, the $20 to waive the daily resort fee was worth it, because it is typically a $25 fee. I am happy and will definitely attempt this again.

I went to Vegas for my Bachelorette with 6 other girl friends of mine. We already had 2 Bella suites at the venetian but we really wanted to be together. I thought the Venetian was a little higher class and we had 2 rooms so I went with $40. I was so nervous standing in line to do this. 2 friends had been there a night earlier and were successful doing it at Ballys. So i went for it. Just sandwiched it between my ID and credit card. The lady was more than happy and upgraded us over to the Palazzo with a joining room suite with a view of the pools and the strip. The room was amazing! So happy I went for it!

Asked if they could find me a room close to an elevator on a smoking floor (3, 9, 29) and if there were any upgrades available - but here's the kicker, it was 10am. Was flying in from the east coast. She said they were really fully booked on those floors (Annual Tobacco Growers Association Mtg! LOL) But she kept looking - she first offered me a hospitality suite that had a huge verandah -a wet bar, room for 75 people and a king murphy bed for only $200 more - no thanks - she kept looking. Next offered me the Sienna Suite for $100 extra - HUGE 2 room suite - double doors, long wide marble hallway with a half bath, big living room with a wet bar. A separate bedroom with a king bed and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, & frameless glass shower w/ multiple jets, a makeup vanity and 3 flat screen TV's. This room goes for $550 (without comps) and it feels like it. Did I get it for free? No. Was it worth it? Yes!

Booked my room via priceline for $130 a night (11/15 - 11/17). I really needed the upgrade because express deals/NYOP on priceline only offer the single king bed when you get a deal; I needed a room with 2 queens because there were 6 of us total. During check in, the place was very busy so I wasn't sure if were going to work. I was helped by a woman in her early 30s. I gave her the $20 sandwich and nicely asked her if it were possible to get a room with 2 queens. She quickly pocketed the 20 and said that wouldn't be a problem. I then asked her if it were possible to get a high strip view and she also obliged with no problems! On top of that, she waived my resort fee and told me I'd be staying on the high floor on the strip at the Palazzo. I went from a single bed suite at the Venetian to a two bed suite at the Palazzo with the resort fee waived on the high floor on the strip! $20 well spent.

I stayed at The Venetian for six nights. My flight got in early, and I arrived at the hotel by 11am. Before walking in the hotel, I prepped the sandwich trick with a fifty instead of a twenty. While holding it in my hand, I was directed to a woman and asked her whether I could try to check-in early. Keep in mind I did not ask for any complimentary upgrades since I was traveling alone for business. After giving her the sandwich, she typed very feverishly...moving a couple things around and placed me on the 32nd floor in the Venetian Tower. My room overlooked the southern end of the Strip and The Venezia Tower pool. I also received four complimentary drink tickets and my resort fee was waived. My floor was very quiet, and the housekeeping service was excellent overall. In the end, I was very happy with what I did, and grateful for what the check-in lady did.

Boy were we nervous to try this, but like many have mentioned previously, there is no reason to be nervous! We arrived about 3 hours early for check-in at the Venetian, having already called to request early check-in and being told that it was not possible due to capacity. We heard other people in line trying to check-in early and being turned down. For us, the early check-in was more important than the upgrade. We presented the sandwich to our young female front desk agent, and although she didn't acknowledge the money, without skipping a beat said 'Let me see what I can do for you.' She went back and visited with her manager twice - once came out to ask if we needed two Queens, which we did - and finally came back with an early check in and an upgrade to a larger, strip-facing suite at the newer Palazzo. She even APOLOGIZED for not being able to do more and said she could have given us a better upgrade if we were staying in a King room. All in all, a great experience. We also used the 'Twenty Dollar Trick' down at the pool when we were unable to find any seats - the pool attendant disappeared for 15 minutes, came back for us, lead us to four prime chairs poolside, and sent a server right over. Again, don't be nervous to try this - Vegas is clearly a tipping town!

Did just as advised here and slipped the young lady at the desk a $50 bill sandwiched between license and credit card. Nicely chatted with her and explained it was my husband's 50th and could she provide a complimentary upgrade and any other nice perks. We were upgraded to a larger suite at the Palazzo on the 32nd floor with amazing views. She provided us with a free refrigerator for our stay and comped the first night resort charge. Just the room alone was at least a $500 upgrade from what we had booked. I was very pleased!

I didn't make a sandwich, but I kept my $20 on the counter as I asked for upgrades, we both knew what was going on; I can't act like a high roller. I had booked a standard room for $109 online which gets a view of the air conditioner. We were given a beautiful view of the strip on a high floor, our resort fee was waived, and we had a fridge for our stay (great for wine/beer in your room as you get ready to go out/take to the pool). We were given a ton of promotional coupons meant for a higher priced room package (drinks, food, etc). While I didn't get a suite (the rooms here are awesome regardless), the $20 tip saved me over $140 in resort fee/fridge costs and we got a great view in a beautiful room which was wonderful at night when the strip was lit up. If you smile, act polite, and tip, your chances are good for an upgrade. Our check-in person was very grateful and friendly which added to it's worth.

She offered me a early check in (worth $20 already), and a room right over the pool, and a 3rd key without charging me for 3rd guest in the room. Asked if that was enough, (money still on counter), I said yes, she said thank you and took money. She knew exactly what was going on, no problem at all. Super easy.

At palazzo checkin, was sent to elite counter as he was free, asked for high floor strip view, a $45 upgrade from my standard luxury suite, the straightforward but polite middle aged guy gave the same, no charge, except that it was a partial strip view and main mountain view, was not bad. Next day, went to front desk, put a conspicuous $20 on the license, n asked if there were any complimentary upgrades, young Asian girl put them on the side, checked with her colleague and said no complimentary upgrades at that time, only paid ones. Then I asked, I wanted a view at the main strip, they discussed at put me on the same floor on the other side, great view of all the other hotels on the strip, and she said I can switch immediately, regardless of the checkout times. I didn't take any change back for the $20. I could have got the view without the trick, but win some lose some, just like in the Casino. I will try it again.

A nice receptionist from Nigeria assisted me on my check-in. His English was so-so and I suspected he was a fairly new employee. Nevertheless, I presented him "the sandwich" and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. He asked me to hold on moment while he checks with his manager. At this moment I figured my attempted bribery was unsuccessful. However, when he returned to the desk he informed me that he can't upgrade my room to a bigger suite, however he could put me on the 32 floor with a strip view. I was totally fine with this. He then handed back my ID, CC, and the $20. I told him the $20 was for him but he said eh couldn't take it.

I was waiting in line for the next available clerk to check me in when this woman came up to me and told me that she could help me at the priority desk. She asked for my last name. I gave it to her and she looked me up and asked me if I wanted to charge incidentals to my room or pay as I go. I told her to charge it to the room and she asked for my CC and ID. I gave her the $20 sandwich (the money was visible since I used AMEX blue card and the card is kind of a see through) and immediately asked if there was a complimentary upgrade available. She put the ID, card and money next to her computer and told me that she would see what she could do. I then immediately asked if I could get a room on the Palazzo side instead of the Venetian. She told me no problem and told me that she got me a room at the Palazzo on the 40th floor with strip view. I pulled another 20 and put it on the desk asking her if she could upgrade me to the Fortuna suite. She saw the money and started clicking away and told me none was available. I then asked if she could waive the resort fee and she told me she could but the downside is, I would get charged for singles uses if I were to use any of the facilities at the hotel. So I decided not to do it, and I took the extra $20 back. She also gave me a couple of passes to LAVO. I paid $134/night through Priceline. The Palazzo's rate is at $289/night for the weekend.

I did as I read, slipped a 20 inbetween my credit card and ID. The young man behind the counter left the 20 on thte top part of the counter and started working away on the computer. He went into the back and then came out and said he was moving us up to a room with a view. The package we booked was a room without a view but thanks to the 20 dolar trick we were upgraded. Bottom line, don't be afraid to do the trick, the staff is hip to it and it works.

This trick worked without a hitch @ the Venetian. We arrived early Sunday PM. The main desk was jammed so they sent us to their other desk a few floors up. I figured I might have a better chance of this trick's success w/ fewer eyes at the desk. The desk we checked in at had very little wait time. I handed the clerk my driver's license on top of the $20 bill w/ the credit card right below. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She upgraded us to a Strip View Room and waived the $19/day resort fees w/ no hesitation. I had called a few days prior trying to get my room w/ a Strip View. The guy on the phone said it would be $45/night higher...Fortunately he did put in the system we wanted a high floor. After all was said & done, the trick got us a strip view room on the 30th floor. The Venetian was great...nice & clean room. I figure that $20 saved us $256 ($45/night x 4 for Strip View + $19/day resort fees) in upgrade costs since we stayed 4 nights. I was nervous about whether it would work while we were waiting in line. I'm very glad I tried it!!! Thanks to this site!!!!

The front desk was pretty busy and there was a manager right behind the desk clerks. I was with my brother who had the room on his card but the hotel was under my name. Came up to the desk to a mid 20s male worker who ask for our IDs. I gave him mine and had my brother give him the $20 dollar sandwich. He put the 20 dollar on the side and put the cards down to search for the room. I ask him if he had any complimentary upgrades. He nodded and started typing into his computer. While he was typing I dropped in tidbits that it was me and my brother and that we'd love to have two queen beds. After a few moments he was hooking us with a room and chatting to me about why we were staying. He was very nice and were genuinely engaged in our travels. I think he was happy to get tipped since he pocketed the money right away as he was searching for available rooms. We were thrilled with our upgrade. Got 5 key cards, some complimentary admissions to Lavo nightclub and even waived the resort fee. Even with that hotel internet access was free for 24 hours!! We checked the value of what we got, it woulda been $140 value we got for only $20! Just plain awesome!

This is for the Palazzo. I checked in at 2:30am on Saturday morning, it was also a holiday weekend, but still relatively slow overall since it's still the cold season. I put my "sandwich" on the counter and asked about any complimentary upgrades. The guy was nice and we struck a conversation about the NBA and our home town teams. He offered to upgrade us to a Luxury Suite with a strip view. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure we got an upgrade but the Palazzo is such a nice hotel that it really didn't matter. We were moved to the 38th floor with a view of the strip. The guy asked me if I wanted change for the tip and I declined. The skeptic in me wonders if the trick actually worked as I'm not sure what the alternative would have been, but I'll just say that ignorance is bliss because I was totally satisfied with our 38th floor, strip view room.

Perfect view to see Mirage, Ceasars Palace, and Bellagio fountain show in the distance (but still nice, especially at night). Venetian Tower is preferred over Venezia Tower, since Venezia is much shorter. Although, all rooms at The Venetian are spectacular and you really can't go wrong from that perspective.

This was the first time I tried the $20 trick so I was a little nervous. Handed the gal my credit card/$20/drivers license sandwich and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She mentioned we were booked via Priceline and were set for two queens. I asked if there were any strip view rooms available and she went to work on the computer. She asked if a King would work, and we said it would be great. She said she thought we would like the room she got for us on the 33rd floor in the Venetian Tower. She said it would be much easier and closer than the other tower. She was right, we were right near the elevator so no long walks to/from casino and parking lot which I had read about with the other tower. We had a great view of the strip south of the hotel including the Mirage Volcano and were very happy with the upgrade. We also both received $25 slot credit when we signed up for the Grazie club.

I ended up in the most beautiful suite, sunk in livingroom, full desk, multifunction printer/copier/fax,;3 plasma tvs..one in the bathroom...just outstanding... Don't feel weird, this was my first time doing this,i'm 45 and was hesitant. The attendant at the front desk definitely knew the drill. We had used BookIt.com to reserve our room and she said that they put all of those reservations in a less desirable tower. Actually stayed at the Palazzo. We rec'd a comp for four nights in a standard room - I was a little nervous because I had never tried this before but at check in I tucked $50 in w/ my credit card and asked for any complementary upgrades - the pretty young girl at the desk smoothly took the $ and placed it on the counter. She placed us in a strip view room on the 40th floor facing w/ a great view of the pool, Treasure Island, Wynn and the fashion mall. Before walking away, she politly asked if I needed change - I told her no, that is for you... This trick will be a new Vegas staple in our check-in routine...

My sister in law asked for upgrades and the clerk said "let me check what discounts I can find for you..." he then asked us for our ID's and CC, I slipped him my ID/CC with $20 trick and asked if there were complimentary upgrades available... The bill disappeared in a new york minute and he said "let me see what I can do for you!" Our rooms were all on the same floor facing the strip. Will definitely do again in future trips. Our clerk was a male in his mid 20's, very accomodating and professional.

Originally purchased a standard room for three nights at Venetian through Hot Wire. When I checked in I had a $20 between my credit card and ID and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. She did not immediately see the $20 but when she did she smiled and got to work. My wife and I were put onto the 37th floor at Palazzo with a Strip view, which gave us a great perspective of the Treasure Island show and Fashion Show Mall (and north up LV Blvd). Like Ben from July, I do not know if this was an upgrade or not compared to the original Venetian room we had booked but I will try this again when we return to Vegas.

Only when we got to the room, did we figure out we were in an older room that overlooked a bunch of rooftop airconditioners and a parking garage. Several lights were out and the room was beaten up. A lot of furious typing and they came up with a room in the Palazoo with a very nice view of the strip. Perfect view of Treasure Island show. Not sure if this was an upgrade or not seeing as how I don't know what room I would have gotten anyways at the Venetian and it probably doesn't cost anymore to get a room on a higher floor...the receptionist left the 20 on the counter until I agreed to to the upgrade and then pocketed it and said thank you. My wife and I were spending our 15 year anniversary so I told the person at the check in and asked for him to check and see if there were any complimentary upgrades. I sandwiched the $20 dollar bill between my driver's license and credit card but made it easy to see. He said, I'll do some checking so keep this (the bill) just for now. He asked if we would like to be on the 34th floor with a partial view of the strip (Looking North) and a view of the pools. We said, YES PLEASE! He was very nice and I gave him the twenty. It works. It really works! Our room at the Palazzo was very nice! We figured it only cost an extra 7 dollars a day to do this. Ron, Moore, OK

I am sending this from my suite at the Venetian looking out at the Strip, pool, mountains and a beautiful sunrise. This is my first time trying the $20 trick and it worked like a charm. I booked the lowest rate I could find which was $159/day for the weekend and $119 for weekdays. Got to the Venetian about 6:00 PM Friday, gave my ID and credit card to the desk clerk and asked for a room on an upper floor with a view of the mountains. It seems kind of silly to hide a tip since the hotels must know of this practice so while he started checking I placed a $20 on the counter in plain view. He spent several minutes typing away, checking his map of the property and looking for a suitable match. He found a room on the highest floor (32) without going into the larger suites and told me that normally the upgrade charge for my suite is $45/night but mine would be complimentary.

She checked my reservation and said that I'm booked for 1 king and that's when I said if its possible to get 2 Queens and she said not a problem and changed it for me. Then she asked if I wanted a suite with a view of the strip, normally its $40 more per night but for me its complimentary and if I wanted that. Also asked how many keys I wanted for the room and what names I wanted to register with the room. I'm pretty sure if I asked for a bigger suite I would have but they only had 1 suite that had 2 Queens. Maybe next time.

I'm not sure what our room is exactly called, but the descriptions match the Venezia Concierge Bella Suite (but then, we weren't in the Venezia tower but the old Venetian building). The front desk guy (looked like he was around 25-30) put me on the 32nd floor with strip view, and the room was newly remodeled. I don't think I've ever had a room this high before (or used that last bank of elevators to get to my room). Our room had two queen beds, and there were 3 flat-screen tv's in our suite: one 27" in the living room, one 32" for the bedroom, and a tiny 15" (i think) in the bathroom. From my room, we can almost see the top of the Venetian building when looking up sideways (I guess penthouses are all that's left above us?). This was on top of a complimentary 2-night stay...Overall, we were very satisfied with what we got.

I tried to put the $20 trick to the ultimate test. In January of 2007 my boyfriend and I and his sister and her husband stayed at the Venetian. We booked the same room type (Venetian Luxury..aka no view) at the same time via their website with a promotional rate (around $129 a night if I remember correctly). We both got to the check-in desk at the same time. His sister went to one person, we went to another. I didnít tell her I was going to try the trick, I really wanted to test it out. When he asked for my credit card and ID I had the $20 folded with the cards in the pass. I asked him if he had any upgrades they would be greatly appreciated. He said he would see what he could do. When we got to our room it looked like a pretty standard Luxury room, we were on the 23rd floor I believe. I went to check out the view and we were directly facing the strip with a view of both the volcano at the Mirage and the pirate show at Treasure Island. It was awesome. We also had turn down service and chocolates on our pillows at night. I called my boyfriends sister and they were on the 10th floor with a view of the parking garage with no turn down service. I would say it worked.

We had reserved two rooms at the palazzo. Checking in I handed the 20 dollar bill and asked for nothing. She asked me to wait, went to someone else and another computer came back and said, I have upgraded you to connecting rooms, we had two rooms, higher floor with view and I have waived the resort fees. I was happy but in a state of shock. My some was with me and couldn't believe it. Still cannot believe it but it happened.
